Primary Group was commissioned by Hand’s Across the Ocean, a non-profit organization devoted to the cause of improving life for the children of Haiti to design a regional, cost effective and uplifting school environment for the underprivileged children of Haiti. To this end, we did design studies for a charter school and complete self-contained campus.

The unique situations that were addressed in the master planning solution were: An appropriate program for the housing, schooling and living of 150+ students and support staff in a cost effective manor. A design of a local “vernacular” style, construction and scale. Safety of the students. A self-sustainable environment that fosters education, as well as, economy of means. The program included, 16 dormitory “pods”, each for 6 students and one den mother, a chapel, academic, sports and agricultural facilities, staff housing and outdoor gathering spaces.
