Malden Station, located in the heart of Malden’s Government District, is a two-level, intermodel transit hub combining retail space with access to the Commuter Rail, Orange Line rapid transit, and bus enclosures serving multiple lines. The major goals of the design modifications are to make the station ADA compliant by December 2003. After a detailed review of existing conditions, the client and design team agreed on modifications including the addition of improvement to street-side pedestrian access, two elevators, a second stairway, tactile warning strips on the platform edge, LED and Grade 2 Braille signage, a new Collector’s booth, handrail replacements and bus kiosk modifications. Urban planning analysis associated with the project resulted in the addition of a landscaped plaza linking the station with the eastern portion of Malden’s Business District and parking lot modifications.
